IPL Photofacial 101
Intense Pulse Light (IPL), also known as photofacial, uses broadband light to treat brown and red spots and general overtone of the skin. It is a popular treatment because it’s effective, affordable and non-invasive.
At Youthology, our clients love the way laser photo-rejuvenation treatments make their skin look and feel: tight, refreshed and even-toned. Our highly-trained estheticians use IPL to improve clients’ sunspots, acne and broken blood vessels, as well as to remove unwanted hair from the body. Learn more about our laser services here.
What does a photofacial treat?
IPL is used to improve the appearance of age spots, sunspots, rosacea, hyperpigmentation and skin texture. The treatment can also be used for hair removal, photo rejuvenation, as well as to alleviate dermatologic diseases like acne. IPL treats skin types 1 – 3 and sometimes 4 on Fitzpatrick’s scale.
How does IPL work?
A handheld device is passed across the skin delivering pulses of broad-spectrum light to the deep layers of the skin. The wavelengths of light influence the skin on a molecular level, meaning there is no need for any incisions or injections.
What is post-procedure care like for photofacials?
- Makeup can be used starting right after the treatment, as long as it is applied and removed very gently.
- Rarely, there is bruising, which can take 1-2 weeks to heal.
- For freckles and age spots, it is normal for the spots to look darker for 3-7 days.
- Crusting can occur, which may last up to ten days.
How does IPL help acne scars?
Acne will often leave the discolored or red marks on the skin. IPL can improve the appearance of acne scars by reducing the redness and evening the skin tone. The light energy helps repair the damage to the melanin as well as boost the body’s collagen production.
