Hyperhidrosis 101
Hyperhidrosis is a condition that causes excessive sweating without reason. The sweating can cause people affected by hyperhidrosis to drip with sweat or soak through their clothes even when they are not hot or exercising. Typically, this excessive sweating occurs in the hands, feet, underarms and/or face. Hyperhidrosis far exceeds normal sweating to the point where it disrupts day-to-day activities, causing those affected by it to have anxiety in social settings.
What causes hyperhidrosis?
Most commonly, hyperhidrosis is caused by overactive nerves signaling the sweat glands even though there is no environmental trigger present. Less frequently, hyperhidrosis can be caused by medical conditions such as diabetes, menopause or thyroid problems.
How can hyperhidrosis be treated?
Treatment for excessive sweating is dependent on the areas of the body that are affected by the condition. Prescription antiperspirant is often the first course of treatment prescribed by doctors. Other options include prescription cream, nerve-blocking medication, antidepressants and Botox injections.
Botox for Excessive Sweating
Botox injections temporarily block the overactive nerves that signal the sweat glands to produce excessive sweat. This is a simple procedure in which the area is numbed before a series of injections are done in the affected area. Compared to other treatments, Botox is an effective and easier way to address excessive sweating with little to no side effects. Results are typically noticed within five days. A single treatment with botox can control underarm sweating for up to 1 year!
Using Botox to treat hyperhidrosis can greatly improve the quality of life for people affected by excessive sweating.
