Hydration vs. Moisturizing
Ever wondered what could possibly be the difference between hydration and moisturizing when it comes to skincare? Or wondered why your skin is still dry, wrinkled and lifeless even though you moisturize religiously?
Fun fact: hydrating your skin and moisturizing your skin are not the same thing.
Water is key to plump, smooth and bright skin. So, hydration and moisturizing are both important elements to maintaining healthy skin. Knowing the difference between the two will help you determine which type of product is right for you and your skin’s needs.
- Hydration refers to the absorption of water in the skin cells, which makes the skin bouncy and plump.
- Moisturizing refers to building the skin barrier to trap and lock the moisture, which makes the skin soft and smooth.
When assessing what your skin needs, you need to determine if your skin is dehydrated, dry or both.
If your skin is dull and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles is increasing, your skin may be dehydrated. Drinking plenty of water is always a great way to hydrate the skin, but your skin may need additional help from a topical hydrator as well.
If your skin is flaky and dry, your skin barrier may not be locking in moisture. When the skin is dry, it is not producing enough lipids. Treating with a moisturizer will create a barrier to prevent the skin from losing moisture.
