Pre & Post Sun Summer Skincare
Pre & Post Sun Summer Skincare
Putting on your sunscreen before a day in the sun is the best and most important step in your summer skincare to prevent damage. However, even with the best SPF a day in the sun at the beach can still be harsh on your skin. We’re sharing our recommended steps and products to help your skin prep for and recover from a day in the sun.
When your skin is exposed to the sun, it is exposed to UVB and UVA rays. UVB is the main cause of skin burning, while UVA is the main cause of aging. Both will cause damage to the skin as well as possible skin cancer, pigmentation issues, rash, acne and more, so it is important to prepare your skin for sun exposure, as well as take good care afterward!
Prep for the Sun
The best prep for your skin on a daily basis, and especially when you’re going to be out in the sun, is to cleanse and exfoliate. Use a product that has Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) in it, which is a natural exfoliator. The Glytone mild gel cleanser or the Image facial cleanser are two great cleansers that exfoliate with AHA.
In the morning, after you cleanse and exfoliate, always apply sunscreen with at least 30 SPF before exposing your skin to the sun. Image Skincare Prevention + is a favorite among our staff! Typically, a teaspoon amount will cover your entire face. Apply a healthy layer to your entire body as well! Reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours and whenever you exit the pool, lake or ocean.
Wearing sunglasses, a hat and SPF clothing is always an added bonus!
Recovery
If you over-expose your skin and get sunburned, immediately cool your skin off by taking a cool shower and removing any and all dirt, debris, and lotions. Wear lightweight clothing and keep the skin as cool as possible. Things like aloe, lidocaine, and spray water will help alleviate the pain. If you have second or third-degree burns, tea bags soaked in cold water and used as cold compresses can help as well as any topical treatment to take out the heat generated from the burn. If you have a severe burn, blistering, or bubbling, go to the ER immediately for treatment. Make sure to stay hydrated by drinking water and drinks with added electrolytes.
We all are going to expose our skin and enjoy the sun, so it’s best to be prepared for as little skin damage as possible!
